What did we learn this week? 

This week in our discussion we got to know our classmates better as well as getting to know our instructor a little better. After that, we learned about the NGSS and all the standards and looked into a few example standards for different grades. Finally, we designed our dream classroom and what we want it to look like and some more details to include as well as talked about the 8 core characteristics of living things. 

Which parts did I find clear and what did I find confusing? 

I understand what the NGSS are now but at first I was very confused by them because of the fact that I had no exposure to the NGSS before and only knew about the common core. But after doing a little bit of research I understand them a lot better and get the new standards and the benefits that come with them. 

How can I apply what I've learned to my future classroom?

I can apply the NGSS to my future classroom because of the knowledge I have gained of it as well as being aware of it. Because of that, I can create lesson plans based off of the NGSS to help my students learn even better. Because I learned the core characteristic of living things I can use that to help design lessons to help teach my students about the characteristics.

 1. This week we talked more about matter and specifically we got into talking about particles and how they act in different situations. We talked about the idea of melting and different situations about melting. We decided that melting counts as a solid going to a liquid that can also be reversed back to its original state. We also did a couple of simulations to look at what happens to the particles when they melt and figure out that they separate from each other and when they're heated up they move faster and bounce around more. We also figured out why when plungers are pushed down what happens to the particles inside of the plunger and decided that the air particles are pushed out causing there to be fewer particles under the seal and as a result, the particles on the outside are pushing down on the lack of particles making it hard to pull the plunger up making it seem like its vacuumed down and stuck.  3.  1. This week we talked about natural selection. We talked about the idea that natural selection is where species that have favorable traits are the ones that are more likely to live and reproduce and therefore pass down these traits and keep those within the pool. We modeled this through an activity where we were given utensils that we had to try and "hunt" beans with and the one with the least amount of beans would "die". In its place, a new offspring of the ones that survived would replace it. We also did a simulation with bunnies that showed what can affect natural selection such as predators, weather, climate, and food.  4. I really liked the idea of the bean activity to represent what traits were favorable and hunted better and therefore were able to eat better and live. There were a couple parts of it that made it a little confusing so I would change that in my future classroom to make it easier but overall I want to include an activity similar to the one we ...

 1. This week we learned a lot about turtles. First, we read a book about all the hardships that turtles face after they are born. These hardships can range anywhere from natural hardships like sharks and raccoons to manmade hardships like jeeps and the wrong light misdirecting them. We then did an activity where we played a baby turtle and attempted to survive these hardships with almost all of us failing. This showed just how much of an issue there is for baby turtles to make it to adulthood and why parents lay so many eggs. We also checked in on our fast plants to see their growth, we have a lot of flowers and the plant has grown quite a bit.  2. I was able to relate what I knew about turtles to what we learned. I knew that baby turtles go through a lot of obstacles in order to reach adulthood and that is why the parents lay a lot of eggs so that way at least maybe a couple can make it I just never realized how much of an effect humans have had on those challenges and made ...
