Blog Post #6

 1. This week we learned a lot about turtles. First, we read a book about all the hardships that turtles face after they are born. These hardships can range anywhere from natural hardships like sharks and raccoons to manmade hardships like jeeps and the wrong light misdirecting them. We then did an activity where we played a baby turtle and attempted to survive these hardships with almost all of us failing. This showed just how much of an issue there is for baby turtles to make it to adulthood and why parents lay so many eggs. We also checked in on our fast plants to see their growth, we have a lot of flowers and the plant has grown quite a bit.

2. I was able to relate what I knew about turtles to what we learned. I knew that baby turtles go through a lot of obstacles in order to reach adulthood and that is why the parents lay a lot of eggs so that way at least maybe a couple can make it I just never realized how much of an effect humans have had on those challenges and made it even more difficult for turtles. It was very surprising to learn of all the issues that humans create especially when they are easy to fix like not driving on the beaches.

5. A couple of questions I had that remained were, what would happen to the ecosystem if more turtles survived the journey to adulthood? Why have turtles not adapted to find better spots to nest that give their offspring a better chance? Finally, what is the percentage chance that a turtle will have one egg from their nest make it to adulthood?

  1. Hey John, I really liked your question about what would happen to the ecosystem of there were more turtles. We often overlook those types of questions as we just talk about how to help make more turtles survive in the wild.
