Blog Post #8

 1. This week we talked about mutations in DNA. We learned about the three different kinds of mutations that exist with those being substitution, insertion, and deletion. Substitution is when a nucleotide is switched with a different one. Insertion is when an extra nucleotide is inserted into the chain. Deletion is when a nucleotide is deleted from the chain. We then did an activity where we looked at the different kinds of mutations and what they would do and how they would change a person into a superhero, villain, or stay the same. We then looked at if mutations are a good thing or a bad thing and decided that they can be both but most mutations are neutral and end up having no effect.

2. I was able to remember and relate a lot of what I already knew to what we learned in class. I remember a lot about the different kinds of mutations that exist and what they all mean. I was able to use that to help me when doing the activity because I had a prior understanding that was able to help and make it go quicker.

4. I learned and liked the idea of using superheroes as a way to relate the idea of mutations to something that the students know very well and are familiar with. This can be used to create a more enjoyable activity that they would like and help them to understand the concept that they are learning all while staying engaged.

  1. Hi John! I relate to you in having this prior knowledge. It was nice to get a refresher on these concepts I have not seen in a few years. The superhero idea is wonderful! It would definitely get the students more engaged and it will also help them avoid negative connotations with the word mutations. I think your right and it will help students have a greater understanding of the content material.

  2. Hi John. I also relate to you for having prior knowledge of this concept, however it is good to be reminded of the basics of what I have forgotten over the years. And keeping the basics down to teach those first to students is important.
