1. The first thing we did was we went over life cycles and specifically we started with learning about the life cycles of animals and insects like butterflies. So to represent that my group and I made a model of a turtles life cycle starting at an egg and moving to a hatchling then juvenile and finally adult. After that, we moved on to the life cycle of a plant. To represent that we planted a couple of fast seeds to watch grow over the next couple of weeks. We also looked at the beans we planted last week to see how they had germinated in one week.
2. I was able to relate what I knew about the life cycle to what I already learned because of what we did in elementary school. When I was in 3rd grade we were given butterfly eggs to keep and grow in our science class. Each day we took care of them and were able to watch them hatch and develop into caterpillars then watch them make their chrysalis and eventually become butterflies and then let them go. So I was able to relate that to what I learned when I was a kid.
5. I only had a couple of questions when going through the lesson. The first being is whether it is possible for certain parts of an organism's life cycle to be significantly shorter or longer than usual? The second question I had was what creature has the shortest life cycle from birth to death? The final question I had is similar to the second one but flipped and that is what organism has the longest life cycle and how long is it?
Hi John, it was cool that you were able to watch the life cycle of a butterfly in real life. It would seem very interesting at a young age watching it hatch, then go through each phase until they were ready to bet let go. I liked your first question about if an organism has a shorter or longer lifespan. I think there are many different kinds of components that go into how long an organism can survive (predators, camouflage, food resource, etc.).
ReplyDeleteHi John! I liked your group's model of the turtle life cycle and thought it was unique since it wasn't an insect. It's really cool you got to experience growing butterflies in elementary school. The question you had about certain life cycle periods being shorter than others was interesting and I was also curious about that.
